Cameron Mackintosh has revealed new casting for the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the West End’s Sondheim Theatre in London.
Following Josh Piterman’s sudden exit back to Australia in October 2023, West End star Killian Donnelly (The Phantom of the Opera) has been playing the role of Jean Valjean in the long-running hit musical.
Killian finishes up on 10 February 2024, and the role will then be played by Swedish musicals star Peter Jöback from 13 February to 9 March 2024.
Finally, Jean Valjean will be played by Dutch star Milan van Waardenburg from 11 March 2024.
Musicals star and multiplatinum selling recording artist Peter Jöback’s previous credits include Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Witches of Eastwick, The Phantom of the Opera, and Kristina.
Milan van Waardenburg’s credits include Les Miserables, Disney’s Frozen, Anastasia, Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tanz der Vampire.
They will join a cast that includes Stewart Clarke as Javert, Katie Hall as Fantine, Will Callan as Marius, Amena El-Kindy as Éponine, Lulu-Mae Pears as Cosette, Luke Kempner as Thénardier, Claire Machin as Madame Thénardier and Djavan van de Fliert as Enjolras.
The cast is completed by Annabelle Aquino, Hazel Baldwin, Brad Barnley, Michael Baxter, Emily Olive Boyd, Rosy Church, Ben Culleton, Matthew Dale, Matt Dempsey, Sophie-May Feek, Matt Hayden, Tom Hext, Christopher Jacobsen, Jessica Johns-Parsons, Yazmin King, Sam Kipling, Anouk van Laake, Harry Lake, Sarah Lark, Ellie Ann Lowe, Ben Oatley, Adam Pearce, Jordan Simon Pollard, Jonathan Stevens, Phoebe Williams and Ollie Wray.
Currently starring as Javert whilst Stewart Clarke is off is West End favourite Bradley Jaden, until 27 January.
Mackintosh’s production of Les Miserables is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. The show has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with additional material by James Fenton and adaptation by Trevor Nunn and John Caird.
The show’s orchestrations are by Stephen Metcalfe, Christopher Jahnke and Stephen Brooker with original orchestrations by John Cameron. The production is directed by James Powell and Laurence Connor, designed by Matt Kinley inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo with costumes by Andreane Neofitou, Christine Rowland and Paul Wills, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Mick Potter, projections realised by Finn Ross & Fifty Nine Productions, musical staging by Geoffrey Garratt, and music supervision by Stephen Brooker and Alfonso Casado Trigo.
One of Killian Donnelly’s next projects is to star in a concert version of Made in Dagenham at the London Palladium on 16 March 2024, alongside Pixie Lott and Bonnie Langford.
Les Miserables is currently booking to 28 September 2024 in the West End.
