National Theatre Live has announced its 99th and 100th shows to be screened in UK and international cinemas.
The National Theatre’s acclaimed production of The Motive and the Cue, which is currently playing the West End’s Noel Coward Theatre until 23 March, will be their 99th production, and released to cinemas worldwide from 21 March 2024.
And forthcoming National Theatre play Nye starring Michael Sheen, will be its 100th release, and will be broadcast live from the National Theatre on 23 April 2024. The live audience at the National will be made up of NHS charities, staff and healthcare students, attending for free.
Other current releases include Dear England starring Joseph Fiennes, which plays its final performance tomorrow, 13 January 2023, at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre, and will be released in cinemas on 25 January; and Andrew Scott in Vanya, set for a 22 February release.
National Theatre Live started in 2009 with a screening of Phèdre, and has now reached over 11 million people across 65 countries.
Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy) directs Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud, Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Elizabeth Taylor in The Motive and the Cue, written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) with set design by Es Devlin (The Crucible).
Nye is a new play written by Tim Price, directed by Rufus Norris, and stars Michael Sheen as Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, in this surreal and spectacular journey through the life and legacy of the man who transformed Britain’s welfare state and created the NHS. The show is playing the National’s Olivier theatre from 24 February to 11 May, and then the Wales Millennium Centre from 18 May to 1 June 2024.
