A new(born) British musical is coming to the West End!
Babies The Musical is getting a West End birthing at the Lyric Theatre in London in November 2023, in a series of staged concerts.
The show features music and lyrics by 42 Balloons composer Jack Godfrey, and has a book by writer and director Martha Geelan.
Babies is a musical comedy about nine Year 11 students who are forced to look after baby simulator dolls, and discover that becoming a parent means changing much more than just nappies.
The show has a blistering pop rock score, and promises to be a joy-filled, heart-wrenching comedy.
The musical took to the stage at this year’s West End Live in the Summer, and originally premiered for a few performances at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. The show also won the British Youth Music Theatre New Music Theatre Award. Development workshops were held for the show in 2022 and 2023 prior to the appearance at West End Live.
The show is produced by Crossroads Live (The Bodyguard, Annie, Chicago, Cats, The Drifters Girl) and Indigo Productions.
Producer for Crossroads Live and Indigo Productions, James Lane, said in a statement: “The mission with Babies has been to create a relatable window into the whirlwind experience of being a teenager in today’s world and to deliver a realistic depiction of school life and coming-of-age. We hope that everyone, in some way, can see both themselves and fragments of their own experiences in one, or maybe even a few, of the brilliant characters Martha and Jack have so wonderfully brought to life. This musical has had such a unique journey thus far – it will be a proud moment to welcome audiences to see it in concert on a West End stage.”
The Babies The Musical staged concerts are running (crawling?) at the Lyric Theatre on the 10 to 12 November 2023.
