Olivier Award-winner Rebecca Frecknall will direct Harriet Walter in The House of Bernarda Alba at the National Theatre this November.
Alice Birch’s radical adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s modern masterpiece will see Harriet Walter (Succession, Killing Eve) play Bernarda Alba, with Isis Hainsworth – currently starring in Frecknall’s Romeo & Juliet at the Almeida – as Adela.
Olivier Award-winner Harriet Walter plays the formidable matriarch, guarding her reputation against the rising tide of her family’s desires in this pitch-black drama exploring the consequences of oppressing women.
Following Olivier Award-winning revivals of Cabaret and A Streetcar Named Desire, Rebecca Frecknall makes her directorial debut at the National Theatre. Joining Frecknall on the production team are Merle Hensel (Set and Costume Designer), Lee Curran (Lighting Designer), Peter Rice (Sound Designer), Alastair Coomer CDG (Casting Director), Naomi Downham (Casting Director) and Lilac Yosiphon (staff director).
The production runs from 16 November 2023 to 6 January 2024.
The House of Bernarda Alba is a co-production with Playful Productions, and is hotly tipped for a West End transfer.
