West End superstar Michael Ball has announced that his autobiography, “Different Aspects: A Memoir”, is hitting the shelves in October 2023.
Michael’s first book was a novel – The Empire, and a second, follow-up novel is promised, but instead Ball’s next book will be his first autobiography.
Michael Ball (Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd) is about to star in a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Aspects of Love, at the Lyric Theatre in London, playing the part of George. He is joined in the company by Jamie Bogyo (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) as Alex, Laura Pitt-Pulford (Sunset Boulevard, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Nell Gwynn) as Rose, Anna Unwin as Jenny and the internationally renowned soprano, Danielle de Niese (Man of La Mancha) as Giulietta.
It’s great timing to be releasing his autobiography on the eve of this new revival of Aspects of Love (the show starts performances tomorrow, 12 May 2023). In 1989, a young Michael Ball landed the lead role of Alex in the musical Aspects of Love, a moment that changed his life forever.
It was the first time he had worked with legends of the stage like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn; and Michael performed smash-hit song Love Changes Everything from the show, with the song charting for 15 weeks, and turning him into a major star. It was also then that he first met his long-term partner Cathy McGowan, and battled back against the stage fright that had threatened his career.
The book promises to offer up a lifetime’s worth of stories, and take us backstage inside the making of a West End hit, and that moment in his twenties when the world was at his feet and his life changed beyond recognition.
A press statement describes the book as “part exploration of the pitfalls and pratfalls of modern theatre and part exploration of his life, his career and his relationships”, and describes the book as the story of a life lived on the stage.
Aspects of Love is playing at the Lyric Theatre until 11 November 2023.
