Baz Luhrmann has confirmed a new musical stage adaptation of his Elvis Presley biopic is underway.
Speaking on the red carpet at the Oscars on Sunday night, Luhrmann said “It will be a bit like Moulin Rouge! There will be an Elvis stage musical. We’re getting into that now.” He previously said “A live stage version would give both the live performance and the inner life of Elvis.”
Luhrmann also revealed on the red carpet that he would not direct the musical however he would be on-board as a producer.
The biopic charts Presley’s rise to fame to unprecedented superstardom and rock ‘n’ roll icon as well has his complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, over the course of 20 years. The film has the full support of the Presley family including Priscilla and his late daughter Lisa-Marie who died suddenly this year.
Casting, creative, venue and song-list is to be revealed.
Two of Luhrmann’s films, Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge have become successful stage shows in recent years, with Moulin Rouge! The Musical currently playing at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End and on Broadway; and Strictly Ballroom The Musical currently touring the UK.
