Sadler’s Wells theatre in London has announced its programme of new productions for 2023.
Highlights include the return of Kate Prince’s acclaimed production of Message In A Bottle set to the iconic hits of Sting, returning to the Peacock Theatre this Autumn from 4 to 14 October 2023.
Prince is currently choreographing and directing the musical Sylvia at The Old Vic starring Beverly Knight and Sharon Rose. Ahead of its performances in the Peacock Theatre, Message In A Bottle will play a UK tour including Southampton, Truro, Plymouth, Canterbury and Salford.
In Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to London with four programmes of work that mix highlights from Ailey’s career with the work of choreographers Kyle Abraham, Aszure Barton, Ronald K. Brown, Jamar Roberts, and Twyla Tharp.
Annual favourite the Flamenco Festival is also back this year, playing for two weeks over the Summer to showcase dancers and musicians from the flamenco world, including performances from Olivier Award-winning dancer and choreographer Sara Baras, Estévez & Paños Company, and a concert by Grammy Award-winning guitarist Vicente Amigo.
Rachid Ouramdane, director of the Chaillot-Théâtre National de la Danse, is going to bring together an ensemble of dancers, athletes, acrobats and… rock climbers! – for Corps extrêmes, an exploration of flight and freedom featuring a climbing wall and high wire.
Also up at Sadler’s Wells is a new show from Breakin’ Convention called State Shift, which promises to be an intimate evening by the Dutch collective of breakers The Ruggeds.
Rambert is bringing their Death Trap production, an evening of works by Ben Duke, to Sadler’s Wells in 2023, which will include an adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice, and a production inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone.
Damien Jalet’s Skid will feature a dance floor tilted at 34°, inspired by the measurement of the earth’s gravitational acceleration; plus SAABA pairs Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sharon Eyal’s distinctive choreography with costumes by Dior’s Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri, in a double bill from GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.
In the Lilian Baylis Studio, Sadler’s Wells resident over 60-s performance group Company of Elders will present a Mixed Bill with specially commissioned work by James Cousins Company and world-renowned waacking artist Bagsy; Second Hand Dance will bring We Touch, We Play, We Dance, for babies and children under 3; and Siobhan Davies will reflect on her life’s work in a screening of the film Transparent, plus there will be conversations with choreographers Akram Khan, Jo Bannon and Charlotte Darbyshire.
Finally, no surprise that over Christmas, Birmingham Rep’s annual adaptation of Raymond Brigg’s The Snowman is back at the Peacock Theatre – for its 26th year!
