A new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s acclaimed rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is about to get a world first.
Students from Edinburgh University’s Savoy Opera Group start performances tonight for the world’s first gender-neutral production of the show.
Non-binary actor Roza Stevenson will take the role of Jesus, and Judas Iscariot will be played by a woman – Hollie Avery. Jesus’ 12 apostles will be played by female or non-binary performers.
The new production is fully licensed and approved by Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, but with the insistence that the lyrics and pronouns within the show must not be changed
The creative producer of the show, Lew Forman, told The Times that, “Jesus is remembered as being a man, but who are we to decide? None of us were around 2,000 years ago. It’s the same story and songs but the audience will view it from a different perspective.”
Jesus Christ Superstar runs at the Church Hill Theatre in Edinburgh from 24 to 28 January 2023.
