Smash-hit Broadway and West End stage hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is getting the big-screen treatment.
Sony is developing a movie based on the stage show, with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman of Playtone producing alongside the stage show’s producer, Paul Blake.
British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People, Where The Crawdads Sing, Under the Banner of Heaven) is set to star as Carole King.
Carole King said in a statement to Variety that: “Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognized as myself when I was younger. She’s a tremendous talent and I know she’s going to give a great performance.”
The feature film will be directed by Oscar nominee Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right), with a script by Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical spent five years on Broadway and bagged a Tony Award for Jessie Mueller as Carole King. It also played for just under 2 years years at the Aldwych Theatre in the West End from 2015 to 2017, led by Katie Brayben – who recently starred as Tammy Faye The Musical at the Almeida.
The musical – and movie – is a showcase for Carole King’s greatest hits, including “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “I Feel the Earth Move” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”
Executive producers will be Sherry Kondor, Christine Russell, Steven Shareshian, and Mike Bosner.
