What's the story of Brilliant Jerks?

Tap a button. Get a ride.

In 2008, an entrepreneur leaves a tech conference in Paris. As he stands on the street, unable to hail a cab, an idea lands with the falling snow: tap a button, get a ride. Ten years later, Mia drives nights in Manchester, Sean is recruited as the brightest new programmer and Tyler moves onto yet another new future. Killing Eve’s Sean Delaney to star in Brilliant Jerks at Southwark Playhouse
Sean Delaney has joined the cast of Brilliant Jerks - a new play coming to Southwark Playhouse this March. Delaney is best known for playing Kenny in the hit TV series Killing Eve, with recent performances in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Life After Life and the Venom sequel. His stage performances include The Ferryman at the Gielgud Theatre in London, Labyrinth and Rabbit Hole, both at Hampstead Theatre. The cast will also feature Evening Standard Award-nominated Shubham Saraf (The Father and The Assassin, National Theatre; Shantaram, Apple TV+; Bodyguard, BBC/Netflix) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (The Nevers, HBO; Black Mirror, Netflix; The Capture, BBC). Directed by Katie-Ann McDonough (Charlie Russell Aims to Please, Mischief; Donal the Numb & Blackout, The Vaults) and produced by Rebecca Gwyther for RJG Productions (Amélie the Musical, Criterion Theatre; A Hundred Words for Snow, Trafalgar Studios), Brilliant Jerks is a fast, touching and scandal-driven show based on the creation of a multi-billion-dollar car-hailing app. The show is from innovative, award-winning writer Joseph Charlton (Industry, HBO/BBC; ANNA X, Harold Pinter Theatre). Joseph Charlton said, I'm astonished and colossally excited by the three actors we've assembled for Brilliant Jerks. I've followed Kiran, Sean, and Shubham for a few years and all three are incredible actors. The play is a mixture of direct address and vigorous multi-rolling throughout; and calls for a trio of supple, intelligent, and commanding actors. All three are special talents and I can't wait to see them bring the play to life. This mesmerising play follows the chain reaction of change, during a decade of fast-growing and unregulated technology, which has so profoundly affected our everyday lives. Brilliant Jerks previously ran at VAULT Festival in 2018, and returns as a full-length production. Brilliant Jerks is playing at the Southwark Playhouse Borough from 1 to 25 March 2023.

Joseph Charlton’s Brilliant Jerks comes to Southwark Playhouse
New play Brilliant Jerks is coming to Southwark Playhouse Borough this Spring 2023. The play will run at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 1 to 25 March 2023. Written by Joseph Charlton (BBC's Industry, ANNA X), Brilliant Jerks was originally performed at the VAULT Festival in 2018, and now returns to London as a full-length production. The show promises to be a fast, touching and scandal-driven play based on the creation of a multi-billion-dollar cab hailing app: the story of one brilliant idea, and the impact on the lives of many, charting the chain reaction of change, during a decade of fast-growing and unregulated technology, which has so profoundly affected our everyday lives. Writer Joseph Charlton said in a press statement: "Brilliant Jerks began life a few years ago when I was working as a journalist. I was interviewing drivers and office workers for Uber in London for an article and got fascinated by their stories. The play is about the beginning of the end of the tech boom era. There was a time only a little while back where "Uber" was almost a state of mind more than just a company: all of us wanted more, bigger, better, now. More convenience, more value, more lifestyle. I think we have a more complicated relationship now with the big tech companies than during their heyday five or ten years ago, but we still live with them in our pockets. This play is about the people behind the tech. It's about a driver, a coder, and a CEO - and what unites or divides those people all working for one company, but living very disparate lives." Casting and further creative team will be announced soon. Southwark Playhouse also announced this week that their new venue Southwark Playhouse Elephant in Elephant & Castle would open in January 2023, and that their existing venue would be renamed Southwark Playhouse Borough. The theatre also announced new productions including Berlusconi A New Musical, new comedy Windfall and a revival of Enda Walsh's award winning play The Walworth Farce.
