The Almeida Theatre in London has revealed full casting for Rebecca Frecknall’s revival of Tennessee Williams’ classic drama A Streetcar Named Desire.
The cast is lead by previously announced BAFTA-winner Paul Mescal (Normal People) as Stanley, Lydia Wilson (The Duchess of Malfi) as Blanche, Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts) as Stella and Dwane Walcott (Machinal) as Mitch.
Cast members announced today include: Eduardo Ackerman who makes his professional stage debut, Ralph Davis (Much Ado About Nothing; The Tempest; King Lear Shakespeare’s Globe), Janet Etuk (I, Joan; Henry VIII Shakespeare’s Globe), Gabriela García (Strictly Ballroom West End), Tom Penn (Midnight Movie Royal Court) and Jabez Sykes (Rock / Paper / Scissors Sheffield Theatres).
Fracknall returns to the Almeida after directing Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke at the theatre, and in the West End, in 2018. She most recently directed the smash-hit West End revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London
Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold said: “Our Associate Director Rebecca Frecknall made her name with her extraordinary award-winning production of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke and now she’s taking on another Williams classic A Streetcar Named Desire with a blindingly good cast.”
The creative team includes Madeleine Girling (set design); Merle Hensel (costume design); Lee Curran (lighting design); Peter Rice (sound design); Angus MacRae (Composer); and Julia Horan CDG (casting director).
A Streetcar Named Desire plays from 10 December 2022 to 4 February 2023 at the Almeida.
Almeida shows transferring into the West End include The Doctor starring Juliet Stevenson, now playing at the Duke of York’s Theatre; and Peter Morgan’s Patriots starring Tom Hollander, which starts at the Noel Coward Theatre in May 2023.
