Hairspray and Mamma Mia! to play outdoors in Summer 2023

Two big West End musicals are going to get outdoor versions next year.

For Summer 2023, Broadway’s Hairspray The Musical and ABBA musical Mamma Mia! will play outdoor venues.

Hairspray will be staged at Kilworth House Theatre in Leicestershire for 52 performances only, from 27 June to 6 August 2023.

Mamma Mia!, which is currently on a UK tour, will stop off in Scarborough from 14 to 18 June 2023 to play the UK’s biggest outdoor venue, Scarborough Open Air Theatre.

Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer said in a press statement: “We are so excited to be bringing Mamma Mia! to Scarborough Open Air Theatre next summer. With its heart-warming story told through the wonderful music of ABBA, Mamma Mia! lends itself perfectly to the outdoors. Following the success of our first ever performances under the stars at Harewood House in 2021 we’re thrilled to now be performing at the UK’s largest outdoor theatre. We can’t wait for audiences to join us and be transported to our sunny Greek idyll.”

Mamma Mia! is also playing in the West End, at the Novello Theatre, and theatre-dinner experience Mamma Mia! The Party is playing at the O2 Arena in London. The stage show has music and lyrics by ABBA’s Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, is directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

Hairspray has a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman, is based on John Water’s cult classic movie.
