Producers of London pantomime Mother Goose, which is coming to the West End this Christmas starring Ian McKellen, have announced that Mel Giedroyc has had to bow out of the production.
Actress, comedian and former Great British Bake Off star Mel Giedroyc was to star as the Goose in the show.
The panto will play the Duke of York’s Theatre from 15 December 2022 to 29 January 2023.
ATG Productions and Mel Giedroyc said is a statement that it was “with great sadness, Mel will no longer be able to star as The Goose in the upcoming pantomime Mother Goose.” The statement went on to say that, “Everyone in the show sends love and best wishes to Mel and her family. Casting for the role of The Goose will be announced soon.”
Mel Giedroyc said today: “Due to personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the forthcoming production of Mother Goose. I am thankful to the producers of the show for being so understanding and wish everyone involved in the production a fantastic tour throughout the UK and Ireland. Now, more than ever we all need a bit of joy, and I can’t wait to see it myself. I know it is going to be fantastic.”
Mother Goose stars multi-award winning actor Ian McKellen as Mother Goose and acclaimed comedian John Bishop as Vic Goose, plus Oscar Conlon-Morrey (Only Fools and Horses) as Jack, Simbi Akande (The Prince of Egypt) as Jill, Sharon Ballard (Quiz) as Evil Fairy Malignia and Karen Mavundukure (The Color Purple) as Good Fairy Encanta. The cast also includes Adam Brown, Gabriel Fleary, Richard Leeming and Genevieve Nicole, with further casting to be announced.
The panto is written by Jonathan Harvey (Coronation Street, Beautiful Thing, Gimme Gimme Gimme) and directed by award-winning director Cal McCrystal, with Set and Costume design is by Liz Ascroft, Choreography by Lizzi Gee, Lighting design by Prema Mehta, Sound design by Ben Harrison and Puppet Design and Creation by Chris Barlow. Casting is by Anne Vosser and the Production Manager is Ben Arkell.
