Beetlebabes are in mourning. Big Broadway show Beetlejuice The Musical is to end its run at the Marquis Theater in New York. The show closes on 8 January 2023.
Based on the 1988 cult movie, the show has struggled on Broadway, opening in 2019 but with a weak box-office it was asked to leave the Winter Garden Theater. That led to a social media backlash and rallying by fans, but then Covid hit. It eventually reopened in April 2022 at the Marquis Theater and its been doing well, but clearly not well enough for the theatre owners and producers.
It will have ended up doing 679 performances across its run. It’s still unclear whether Beetlejuice The Musical will get a London transfer and a West End run, but there are no shortage of UK-based fans who want this to happen.
The news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that The Phantom of the Opera is closing on Broadway. Plus Dear Evan Hansen said goodbye last week, and Come From Away is leaving Broadway next month.
Really really hoping this comes to the West End 2023, so excited!!
