Billy Elliot The Musical delayed at Curve Leicester due to covid in the cast

Curve Leicester has cancelled the first week of performances of Billy Elliot The Musical due to delays associated with covid in the cast.

The show had been due to begin previews on 7 July, however it will now begin performances on 13 July with an official opening night on 20 July. Curve has postponed the show slightly due significant valuable rehearsal time being lost due to a number of covid cases in the company. The company has now fully recovered.

All ticket holders for postponed performances have been notified and the show has now added an extra week of performances.

Curve Chief Executive Chris Stafford and Artistic Director Nikolai Foster released this statement:

Unfortunately, valuable rehearsal time for Billy Elliot the Musical has been lost due to a number of covid cases in our company. Therefore, we have made the decision to cancel performances from Thursday 7th to Tuesday 12th July to allow us to make up time in the rehearsal room and ensure we deliver a first-class production for our audiences.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by this delay in opening. All customers affected by the show postponement have been contacted by our Box Office team. If you have not received an email from us, then please contact us on tickets@curvetheatre.co.uk

Whilst we are disappointed BILLY is opening a little later than planned, we are pleased to announce we are extending the run by an extra week with final performances now scheduled until Saturday 20th August.

The Billy Elliot company is now fighting fit, and we would like to thank them for their spirit and dedication to this production. We cannot wait to share this electrifying Made at Curve musical with you all next month!”

Directed by Nikolai Foster (A Chorus Line, Sunset Boulevard – At Home, West Side Story), this will mark the first new production of the Olivier and Tony Award-winning musical since it premiered in London in 2005.

The Made at Curve production of Billy Elliot the Musical will be choreographed by Lucy Hind, with Musical Supervisor and Musical Director George Dyer. The set will be designed by Michael Taylor with costumes designed by Edd Lindley. Also joining the creative team are Lighting Designer and Curve Associate Ben Cracknell, Sound Designer Adam Fisher, Props Supervisor Lizzie Frankl, RYTDS Resident Assistant Director Lilac Yosiphon, Birkbeck Trainee Director Thyrza Abrahams, Associate Choreographer James Berkery, Dialect Coach Elspeth Morrison, Fight Director Kev McCurdy and Head Chaperone Helen ‘H’ Mclaren-Frost.

Based on Stephen Daldry’s BAFTA-winning 2000 film starring Jamie Bell and Julie Walters, Billy Elliot the Musical features music from Elton John and book and lyrics by Lee Hall. The musical first premiered at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005 and went on to win a host of international awards, including four Olivier Awards and ten Tony Awards.
