Birmingham Rep has revealed a first look at new musical, Playboy of the West Indies which receives its world premiere at the venue this June.
Based on the Irish Classic The Playboy Of The Western World, Mustapha Matura’s hilarious reinvention Playboy Of The West Indies has been delighting audiences and critics alike world-wide for over 35 years. Now, the classic play has been transformed into a glorious new musical with a toe-tapping, finger-snapping score firmly rooted in the Caribbean.
Lead actors Durone Stokes (A Taste Of Honey – Trafalgar Studios / Dreamgirls – Savoy Theatre) and Nicole Sawyerr (Much Ado About Nothing – RSC / Beneath The City – Birmingham Rep) met ahead of the rehearsal to record the song “I’ll Be Thinking of You” which features in the new musical.
Also joining the cast of Playboy of the West Indies at The Rep will be Elizabeth Ayodele, Guy Burgess, McCallam Connell, Derek Elroy, Nathaniel Morrison, Neil Patterson, Gleanne Purcell-Brown, Rachel Summers, Chris Tummings and Angela Wynter.
Playboy of the West Indies is written by Mustapha Matura; music composed by Clement Ishmael and Dominique Le Gendre, with lyrics by Clement Ishmael, Nicolas Kent, Dominique Le Gendre and Mustapha Matura; and directed by Clement Ishmael, Nicolas Kent and Dominique Le Gendre.
The full creative team includes; Choreographer and Movement Director, Ingrid Mackinnon; Set Designer, Michael Taylor; Costume Designer, Natalie Pryce; Lighting Designer, Matt Eagland; Sound Designer, Tony Gayle; Musical Director, Ian Oakley; Casting Director, Debbie O’Brien; Production Manager, Sam Paterson; and Voice & Dialect Coach, Simone Sauphanor.
Co-Director and Co-Producer of Playboy of the West Indies, Nicolas Kent said; “We have assembled a stellar creative team to bring Mustapha Matura’s adaptation of the classic Irish play to life as never seen before in a musical world premiere at Birmingham Rep. Clement Ishmael (Five Guys Named Moe, The Lion King) and Dominique Le Gendre (Royal Opera House, Talawa Theatre) have provided an infectious new score that will transport audiences to the Caribbean.
