Birmingham Rep has announced the full cast for its upcoming production of The Snowman which will see a new take on the old Christmas classic. Olivier Award-winning costume designer Tahra Zafar, who did the costume design for Paddington, will also join the creative team ahead of the show’s world premiere and subsequent transfer to the Peacock Theatre.

Birmingham Rep announced earlier this year that they’re giving Christmas classic The Snowman a revamp ahead of a London run this festive season. Details of the full cast have been unveiled today along with an Olivier Award-winning addition to the creative team.

The Snowman will premiere at the company’s main stage in October, before transferring to the Peacock Theatre, Sadler’s Wells’ West End home, running from November into the new year.

This new adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ beloved picture book will feature Howard Blake’s acclaimed score from the animated film, including the iconic “Walking in the Air.”

A costume designer with serious pedigree

The new production, directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Will Tuckett, also welcomes a new face to the creative team.

Tahra Zafar, who has more than 30 years of experience in live events across theatre, film and TV, will design the Snowman costume. Her most recent iconic design was Paddington Bear in Paddington the Musical at the Savoy Theatre, for which she won an Olivier Award.

Her wide-ranging credits include Ant-Man 3, Star Wars VII, In the Night Garden and the monster costume for Lady Gaga’s Monster Tour. She was also responsible for 23,000 costumes for the London 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, including that of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s sky-diving double.

A Birmingham institution for over 30 years

The original Rep production of The Snowman first opened to Birmingham audiences in 1993 and has charmed audiences for 32 years, becoming the Rep’s longest-running production. The show has since toured the UK and broken records as the West End’s longest-running festive show, with a 29-year seasonal residency at Sadler’s Wells’ Peacock Theatre.

On the news of the reimagining, Birmingham Rep’s Artistic Director Joe Murphy said:

“The Snowman has a very special place in the history of The Rep. For over 30 years this beloved production has enchanted thousands, possibly millions, of theatre-goers, for many of whom it will have been their introduction into the captivating world of theatre.

With all the magic and joy of the original, and of course the unforgettable score by Howard Blake, this freshly-minted production looks set to thrill the next generation. I can’t wait for audiences to see what Will Tuckett and his exceptional team have created, and it’s a privilege and honour that it will premiere here in Birmingham at The Rep.”

This new staging marks the first major reimagining of the production in over three decades.
