Bonnie and Clyde The Musical

Bonnie & Clyde The Musical reviews at the Arts Theatre ★★★

Reviews are in for Bonnie & Clyde The Musical at the Arts Theatre in London.

Whilst social media has been aflame with positive reviews leading up to press night, Bonnie & Clyde has undoubtedly split the critics with two stars a piece from The Guardian and Daily Telegraph and a whopping five stars from The Sun.

Olivier-nominated Frances Mayli McCann (Heathers The Musical,  Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour) and Jordan Luke Gage (& Juliet) lead the cast as the fearsome, lovestruck duo Bonnie & Clyde.

Directed by Nick Winstone with design by Philip Witcomb, the show has music by Tony nominee Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Tony and Oscar winner Don Black and a book by Emmy Award nominee Ivan Menchell.

Set in depression era Texas America, the story follows Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow who went from being nobody’s to America’s most renowned folk heroes and the Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmares. Fearless, shameless, and alluring, Bonnie & Clyde is an electrifying story of love, adventure and crime.

The lead cast also features Olivier Award winner George Maguire (Sunny Afternoon) as ‘Buck Barrow’, Natalie McQueen (9 to 5 The Musical, Kinky Boots) as ‘Blanche Barrow’, Ako Mitchell (The Lion King, Ragtime, Sister Act) as ‘Preacher’ and Cleve September as ‘Ted’.

Rounding out the cast are Pippa Winslow as ‘Cumie Barrow/Governor Miriam Ferguson/Eleanore’, Gracie Lai as ‘Emma Parker/Stella’, Alistair So as ‘Sheriff Schmid’, Alexander Evans as ‘Henry Barrow/Deputy Johnson’, Ross Dawes as ‘Captain Frank Hamer’, Barney Wilkinson as ‘Bud/Archie’ and swings Charlie McCullagh and Annie Guy.

Bonnie & Clyde The Musical is playing until 10 July 2022 at the Arts Theatre, London

"Frances McCann is a mesmerising Bonnie whose solo songs and heartbreak at realising she will die with her lover make the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention."

"the cast couldn’t mesmerise more. Out in front are Natalie McQueen as Clyde’s sister-in-law Blanche and Jordan Luke Gage as Clyde."

"McCann has particularly little to latch on to in Bonnie, but her voice is a godsend."

"They shoot, you snore"

"What's strange about the musical inspired by the two infamous live-fast-die-young gunslingers is how criminally conventional it is"

"Outlaws robbed by a generic rootin’-tootin’ musical"

"The cast could scarcely give it more gusto – Ako Mitchell also brings gravitas as the Preacher – but they are hobbled by a script that never works out what it wants to say, or why it’s saying it."

"Superbly Staged & Brilliantly Performed"

"Is Bonnie & Clyde The Musical worth the wait? Indeed it is. Despite its flaws, it is superbly staged and brilliantly performed, with a couple of very sexy leads in Frances Mayli McCann and Jordan Luke Gage"
