America’s most important theatre awards – the Tony Awards – are nearly upon us for 2022.
Run by the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, and have been going since 1947! They are given annually to theatre professionals for distinguished achievement on Broadway.

When will the Tony Awards 2022 nominations be announced?
Nominations for the 2022 Tony Awards were announced on Monday 9 May at 9am ET (New York Time) on the Tony Awards official YouTube page. The nominations were presented by Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren and Tony Award Nominee Joshua Henry.
Shows with the most nominations include A Strange Loop, with an impressive 11 Tony Award nods, closely followed by musical MJ and Paradise Square with 10 nods each, Stephen Sondheim’s Company with 9 nominations, plus the National Theatre’s The Lehman Trilogy and West End musical SIX: The Musical, with 8 nominations each.

What date will the 2022 Tony Awards winners be announced?

How can I watch the Tony Awards 2022 at home?
For US viewers the ceremony will be broadcast in a four-hour television event on CBS on Sunday 12 June 2022. It will be live broadcast coast-to-coast for the first time. The show will also be streamed on Paramount+.
Can I watch the Tony Awards 2022 in the UK and internationally?
Sadly UK viewers won’t be able to watch, as Paramount+ only starts in the UK on 22 June (bad timing!!!!!), although highlights will then be available to watch. We are unsure if highlights or the awards will be streamed on TonyAwards.com – seems unlikely given that the rights have gone to CBS.
Audiences in Latin America, Central and South America, Brazil, Australia and Japan can get the awards via their local TV services.
What time is the Tony Awards 2022 on TV?
The pre-awards celebration, The TOny Awards: Act One will start at 7pm to 8pm ET / 4pm – 5pm PT on 12 June on Paramount+, with exclusive content. Then the awards ceremony of the American Theatre Wing’s 75th Annual Tony Awards will run live from 8pm to 11pm ET / 5pm – 8pm PT on the CBS, with streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.
What shows are eligible for 2022 Tony Awards?
The Tony Awards eligibility cut-off date for the 2021-2022 season, and so the 75th Annual Tony Awards 2022, was 4 May 2022 for all Broadway productions. This was an extended date due to Covid. So the full eligibility dates were 1 August 2021 to 4 May 2022, and lots of shows were hurrying to get on stage before this date!
Who is hosting this year’s Tony Awards 2022?
The Tony Awards: Act One – hosted by Emmy winners Darren Criss and Julianne Hough — will kick off the evening at 7 PM ET with an hour of exclusive content streaming live on Paramount+ that will feature performances and the presentation of several honors. The three-hour ceremony will begin at 8 PM ET on CBS, also streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.
The three-hour 75th annual Tony Awards will be hosted by Ariana DeBose, the Academy Award winner for Steven Spielberg movie West Side Story, and Tony Award nominee for Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. The 74th awards in 2021 were hosted by Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr., and the 73rd annual awards in 2019 were hosted by James Corden. There were no 2020 awards due to Covid.

There’s no news yet on who is performing at the 75th Tony Awards, but expect Broadway to give it their all given the last two years of Covid shutdowns. 2022 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award: Angela Lansbury will receive a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award this year, presented during the ceremony on 12 June.
Lansbury is a five-time Tony Award winner in competitive categories, winning for Mame, Dear World, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd and Blithe Spirit.

Who organises the Tony Awards?
The American Theatre Wing is the organisation behind the Tony Awards. The Tony Awards are produced in collaboration with Tony Award Productions, a joint venture of The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, and White Cherry Entertainment. Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss are executive producers for White Cherry Entertainment. Weiss will serve as director of the 2022 awards ceremony.
How are Tony Award winners chosen?
First off, there is a Nominating Committee that chooses which shows get nominated for Tony Awards. It is made up of a rotating group of about 50 theatre professionals who serve for overlapping three-year terms. Committee members are asked to see every new Broadway show. The committee then votes on the nominations.
The 2021/2022 Tony Award Nominating Committee consisted of the following 29 theatre professionals: Warren Adams, Bob Alwine, Becky Ann Baker, Pun Bandhu, Milly Barranger, Christopher Burney, Kathleen Chalfant, Eisa Davis, Jerry Dixon, Peter Jay Fernandez, Kamilah Forbes, Scott Frankel, Maija Garcia, M L Geiger, Ann Harada, Michael Kantor, Martyna Majok, John Mauceri, Jonathan McCrory, Sheila Nevins, James C. Nicola, Peter Parnell, Rosalba Rolón, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Don Scardino, Kimberly Senior, Randy Skinner, Michael Stotts and Michael Benjamin Washington.
The people who vote for actual Tony Award winners are around 750 Broadway professionals, including voting members of The Broadway League and the board of directors and designated members of the advisory committee of the American Theatre Wing, plus members of the governing boards of Actors’ Equity Association; the Dramatists Guild; SDC, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society; United Scenic Artists; and the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. Other eligible voters include members of the Theatrical Council of the Casting Society of America and members of the New York Drama Critics Circle and the Tony Awards Nominating Committee.

After Antoinette “Tony” Perry, an American actress and director, and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. The awards were founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, and have been broadcast on CBS since 1978.
