Nominations have been announced for the 75th Annual Tony Awards 2022.
Announced today, 9 May 2022, in New York, by Tony Award-winner Adrienne Warren and three-time Tony Nominee Joshua Henry, the awards cover 26 competitive categories and are organised by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
The nominees have been selected by an independent committee of 29 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee, and judging of the winners will take place by 650 designated Tony voters within the Broadway theatre community.
The winners of the awards will be announced on 12 June 2022, at a glamorous ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York, hosted by West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana DeBose. (See here for times of the ceremony and details of TV and streaming on CBS and Paramount+).
Criteria for Broadway shows being eligible for 2022 Tony Awards was extended this year because of Covid, with 41 shows having been eligible during the 1 August 2021 to Wednesday 4 May 2022 time period.
West End shows and people did especially well this year, with a large number of nominations including director nods for Marianne Elliott (Company), Sam Mendes (The Lehman Trilogy), Christopher Wheeldon (MJ)and Toby Marlow & Lucy (SIX The Musical); actor nods for Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester (The Lehman Trilogy) and David Threlfall (Hangmen); and actress nominations for Sharon D Clarke (Caroline, or Change!) and Ruth Negga (Macbeth).

Big shocks were Funny Girl only getting one nomination, for Jared Grimes (Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical), overlooking stars Beanie Feldstein and Ramin Karimloo, Harvey Feinstein for his reworking of the show’s original book, and director Michael Mayer. Also, former Bond star Daniel Craig getting passed over for his star turn in Macbeth.
Looking at the Tony Awards 2022 Shows League Table, top of the crop, with 11 nominations is A Strange Loop, closely followed by MJ and Paradise Square with 10 nods. Stephen Sondheim’s Company – a transfer from the West End – brings in 9 nominations, followed by another UK transfer, the National Theatre’s The Lehman Trilogy with 8 nominations. Also with 8 nods is SIX: The Musical.
Close behind is for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and Girl From The North Country, both with 7. The Music Man and The Skin of Our Teeth are set with 6 nods each, and Clyde’s, Hangmen and Mr. Saturday Night each get 5.
American Buffalo, Flying Over Sunset, Take Me Out and Trouble in Mind get 4 nominations each, and Caroline, or Change, Dana H., How I Learned to Drive, Macbeth, POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, and Skeleton Crew – each with 3 nominations.
Shows with one nod include Diana, The Musical, Funny Girl, Lackawanna Blues, The Minutes, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite.
A few Tony Awards winners have already been announced, with the 2022 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre to be presented to the Asian American Performers Action Coalition (AAPAC); Broadway For All; music copyist, Emily Grishman; Feinstein’s/54 Below and United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, IATSE. Also, the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award will be presented to Robert E. Wankel.
A Special Tony Award will also be awarded to James C. Nicola, the Artistic Director of New York Theatre Workshop since 1988. He has been instrumental in developing many acclaimed productions, including Jonathan Larson’s Rent; Tony Kushner’s Slavs! and Homebody/Kabul; Doug Wright’s Quills; Caryl Churchill’s Mad Forest, Far Away, A Number and Love and Information; Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová and Enda Walsh’s Once; David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s Lazarus; and eight productions directed by Ivo van Hove.

Nicola, Peter Parnell, Rosalba Rolón, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Don Scardino, Kimberly Senior, Randy Skinner, Michael Stotts and Michael Benjamin Washington.
