Our occasional series about BROADWAY and what we are excited about in 2022 continues with….
Funny Girl at the August Wilson Theatre
It’s hard to think of anything more anticipated than the Broadway revival of FUNNY GIRL, coming to the August Wilson Theatre in New York from 26 March 2022.
It’s also hard to believe that this musical – immortalised on stage and then film by Barbra Streisand 58 years ago – hasn’t been seen on Broadway since! Presumably because no one thought they would ever be able to top Streisand, until now…
Broadway can wait no longer, and Golden Globe nominee Beanie Feldstein (American Crime Story: Impeachment, Lady Bird, Booksmart, Hello Dolly!) is coming to the Great White Way to give her Fanny Brice, alongside our very own Ramin Karimloo (Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera,) as Nick Arnstein, the part played by Omar Sharif in the movie.
The show also stars the fabulous Emmy Award winnerJane Lynch (Glee) as Fanny’s mother Rosie, andJared Grimes (Manifest) as Eddie Ryan.
Funny Girl is being directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), who told EW back in October that Beanie is “delightfully funny, warm, intelligent, a charming singer and dancer, and truly a ‘bagel on a plate full of onion rolls!’ I’m beyond excited to collaborate with Beanie as we bring this iconic musical back to Broadway where it belongs.”
Fun fact, Beanie Feldstein made her Broadway debut as Minnie Fay in Bette Midler’s Hello, Dolly! so is no stranger to hoofing the boards, and we expect great things from this talented actress.
The revival of this show will get a revised book by Hairspray’s Harvey Fierstein, tweaking the original by Isobel Lennart. The music and lyrics, of course, are by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill.
Funny Girl is about Lower East Side girl Fanny Brice, as she fights her way to fame in the midst of naysayers and the ups and downs of her tempestuous relationship with producer Nick Arnstein.
The show is being produced by UK mega producer Sonia Friedman, plus Scott Landis and the Menier Chocolate Factory’s David Babani. The Menier put on the 2015 revival of the show starring Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice, also directed by Michael Mayer, and which transferred to the Savoy Theatre.
Dare we hope that Funny Girl might make it back over here at some point in 2022 or 2023, maybe even with Beanie? Every actress deserves her West End debut.
