International cabaret artist Meow Meow joins Joanna Riding in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

MEOW MEOW in The Umbrellas of CherbourgAustralian cabaret artist Meow Meow is set to make her West End musical debut this spring in a new stage adaptation of French cult classic The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

In the show she plays cabaret artist Lola, which doesn’t sound much of a stretch, but her unique brand of exotic – and erotic – cabaret promises to shake things up a bit on Shaftesbury Avenue, and keep up the high creative expectations around any new Kneehigh production.

Meow Meow has starred in London’s La Clique cabaret show, and her unique style of “kamikaze cabaret” has wowed the US and Europe. She recently won the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize for her show Feline Intimate, and her solo shows have been curated by the likes of David Bowie, Pina Bausch and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

The Sydney Opera House recently commissioned her to produce original music theatre work Vamp, and in New York she has performed at the Lincoln Centre and Carnegie Hall, and toured the US with The Dresden Dolls. A forthcoming album – Here Kitty Kitty …The Lost sessions with Pink Martini’s Thomas M Lauderdale – will be released this year.

Produced by the Kneehigh theatre company (Brief Encounter), this new production of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, at the Gielgud Theatre from 5 March, is directed by Emma Rice and will also star Olivier Award winning Joanna Riding and Broadway’s Andrew Durand (Spring Awakening).
