Shakespeare’s Globe opens public booking for its 2011 theatre season, The Word is God, on Monday 14 February 2011.
Marking the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, the season builds on the Globe’s most successful year to date, following the 2010 Kings and Rogues programme, which achieved a record 91% capacity attendance.
The season opens with a 69-hour, cover-to-cover reading of the King James Bible, performed by 20 actors over eight days between Palm Sunday and Easter Monday, alongside a small-scale touring Hamlet starring Joshua McGuire and directed by Dominic Dromgoole. Hamlet opens on Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, before touring the UK and Europe.
Large-scale productions include the Globe premiere of All’s Well That Ends Well, directed by John Dove and starring Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee; Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Jeremy Herrin, with Eve Best as Beatrice and Charles Edwards as Benedick; and the Globe’s first production of Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, directed by Matthew Dunster and starring Paul Hilton.
In August, the Globe presents a new version of the Mystery plays by Tony Harrison, directed by Deborah Bruce. Howard Brenton’s Anne Boleyn, directed by John Dove, returns following its 2010 sell-out run, and the season concludes with The God of Soho by Chris Hannan, directed by Raz Shaw.
Two new small-scale productions, As You Like It and Hamlet, continue the Globe’s touring programme, which reached over 35,000 people across the UK and Europe in 2010.
Following the filming of four productions in 2010, the Globe continues its cinema programme in May 2011 with The Merry Wives of Windsor, and will film Much Ado About Nothing, All’s Well That Ends Well and Doctor Faustus during the 2011 season.
Public booking opens on 14 February 2011.
