Premiering in September at the Arcola Theatre is the world premiere of The Turn of the Screw by Olivier Award-winning playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm. The production will head out on a UK tour following a short run at the London venue.
Coming to London this autumn, The Turn of the Screw is a world premiere production. Adapted by award-winning playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Dick Whittington, Cake) this new play brings to life the1898 gothic horror novella by Henry James.
On the announcement of the upcoming production, playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm said: “I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to adapt this gothic classic. It has all the makings of a perfect ghost story (creepy children, huge strange house, the legacies of previous occupants) and yet it plays with ambiguity and we’re never sure of what is really happening.”
“It’s an exciting tale to tell and I am particularly excited to be working with Nicky and everyone at Blackeyed Theatre and the Arcola on it. Horror in theatre is one of my greatest joys because there is nothing better than a well-told story in the dark, and this is one of the all-time greats.”
The cast and creative team

The story of The Turn of the Screw follows a young governess who is hired to care for two children. All is well at first, but something dark seems to be lurking just beneath the surface.
The cast of this upcoming production has also been announced, including:
- Amy Tara (Hamlet, The Borrowers) as the Governess
- Toby Beynon as Miles/Quint
- Jim Fish (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Man/Master
- Katy Slater (The Winter’s Tale) as Mrs Grose
The company is completed by Kathleen McAuley Irvine as Flora/Jessel and Janita Mikkola as Ensemble, both making their professional debuts following training at LAMDA.
Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s gripping new adaptation of The Turn of the Screw is directed by Nicky Allpress, along with a creative team that includes lighting designer Oliver McNally (Anne of Green Gables, Love Quirks), set and costume Designer Matthew Cassar (Amelie, Into The Woods), sound designer Hattie North (Ms Holmes and Ms Watson) and illusionist Wayne Fox.
