Bryan Batt, internationally recognised for his portrayal of Salvatore Romano in the multi-award-winning series Mad Men, will lead the cast of the new musical, that reimagines Hoover’s formidable 48-year career through the satirical lens of a 1950s-style Hollywood musical comedy.

The creative team

The production boasts a powerhouse creative team from the worlds of TV and Broadway including:

  • Book: Harry Shearer (The Simpsons, This Is Spinal Tap) and Tom Leopold (Cheers, Seinfeld).
  • Music: The late Peter Matz, the legendary arranger for Barbra Streisand and Carol Burnett.
  • Director: Josh Seymour (The Prude’s Progress).
  • Choreography: Olivier Award-winner Bill Deamer (Top Hat).

The show promises to explore both the public iron fist and the private complexities of Hoover’s life. As director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, he secured his position as the most powerful man in America by gathering information on the private lives of others. Yet behind all the machismo were his concealed sexuality, his secret partying and his lifelong love affair with his deputy, Clyde Tolson.

“Hysterical and wildly entertaining”

Speaking about his London debut, Bryan Batt said he was “beyond thrilled,” describing the script as “hysterical, sometimes touching, and wildly entertaining.”

Co-writer Harry Shearer praised his leading man’s versatility: “Aside from his more serious acting, Bryan has lit the stage up the past several years in our annual Christmas Without Tears show in New Orleans: funny, great singing, and, to quote Stephen Sondheim, graceful as a grouse.”

The production features design by Sophia Pardon, costumes by Tom Paris, lighting by Jamie Platt, and sound by Nick Lodge. Casting is by Harry Blumenau, with James Quaife for Luminous Entertainment Group serving as general manager.
