Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page is returning to the London stage in The Great Gatsby.
Page is planning to both produce and star as Jay Gatsby in a major new stage adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic.
The project is not to be confused with the recent West End musical production, which played the London Coliseum; or the forthcoming Florence Welch-penned Gatsby: An American Myth, which is eyeing a Broadway premiere.
Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton, The Gray Man, Black Bag, You, Me & Tuscany) told Baz in Deadline that the story of The Great Gatsby has always been “a story incredibly close to my heart, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing this new adaptation to life in London’s West End.”
A new version of the American classic
This new version of The Great Gatsby is written by Joel Horwood (The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Gatsby) and Maria Aberg (Gatsby, Blank), and will be directed by former Donmar Warehouse artistic director Michael Longhurst (Woman in Mind).
Last year, Maria Aberg directed her and Joel Horwood’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, called simply Gatsby, at the Uppsala Stadsteater in Sweden.
Page and Longhurst
Regé-Jean Page and Michael Longhurst have previously worked together on Alan Bennett’s The History Boys at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
Regé-Jean’s other theatre credits include The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015, alongside Jonathan Pryce.
The Great Gatsby will be produced by Melting Pot, led by Simon Friend (Paranormal Activity, Life of Pi, The Father), and Page’s production company A Mighty Stranger.
The Great Gatsby in the West End
Performances of The Great Gatsby are expected to begin in 2027, with the West End theatre to be announced.
