A new stage musical based on the much-loved film Practical Magic is in development.
Practical Magic The Musical will be directed by British actress and director Maria Friedman, and follows her acclaimed London and Broadway production of Merrily We Roll Along.
Practical Magic is based on the best-selling novel by Alice Hoffman and the cult-classic Warner Bros. Motion Picture directed by Griffin Dunne.
The show will have an original score by Grammy Award winners Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg, and a book by Alice Hoffman and Peter Duchan. Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures executive Mark Kaufman will serve as Creative Consultant.

In Practical Magic, for more than two centuries, the Owens women have been feared, blamed, and whispered about in their small Massachusetts town. Orphaned as children and raised by their eccentric aunts, sisters Sally and Gillian Owens grow up determined to escape the ancestral curse they inherited. Choosing opposite paths, the sisters try to outrun their past, until love, loss, and long-buried secrets pull them back together. Forced to confront their family legacy, Sally and Gillian must decide whether the past can be overcome—and how much they are willing to risk for love.
The Practical Magic book came out in 1995, with the movie, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, following in 1998. A new sequel to Practical Magic is premiering this September 2026.
The new musical will be produced for Broadway by Stephanie and Nicole Kramer and Brian and Dayna Lee.
There’s no current news about Broadway dates or venues, or news on a possible West End transfer for the show.
