The musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will return to UK stages in 2027 with a 10th anniversary tour, featuring a new song written by original creators Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae.

The tour opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on 15 January 2027, ten years after the show first premiered at the Sheffield Crucible. Opening in Leeds marks a homecoming for the Yorkshire-rooted show, inspired by the real-life story of Jamie Campbell and his mother, Margaret.

After its opening in Leeds, the tour will visit Chester, Sunderland, Sheffield, Manchester, Wimbledon, Liverpool, Glasgow, Birmingham, Aylesbury, Oxford and Woking, with further dates to be announced.

The production will directed by Matt Ryan, based on the original direction of Jonathan Butterell.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie tells the story of 16-year-old Jamie New, who grows up on a council estate in Sheffield and dreams of becoming a drag queen. Supported by his mother and close friends, Jamie confronts bullying and prejudice while learning to embrace his identity.

The musical was inspired by the television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16 and is known for its humour, emotional warmth and message of self-acceptance. The show originally starred John McCrea as Jamie with Layton Williams & Ivano Turco taking over the roles.

The creators of the show, Butterell, Gillespie Sells and MacRae, said: “We were inspired by the true story of Jamie and Margaret Campbell, and we are thrilled that their story is still inspiring the world with its sass-filled magic.

Since opening in Sheffield in 2017, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has won eight major theatre awards, including Best New Musical at the UK Theatre and WhatsOnStage Awards, and received five Olivier Award nominations. It has also been screened in cinemas internationally and adapted into a feature film, released globally on Amazon Prime.

With its pop-inflected score and coming-of-age story, the 10th anniversary tour offers audiences the chance to revisit – or discover for the first time – a musical that has become a landmark of contemporary British theatre.
