Cate Blanchett is returning to London’s National Theatre in a world-premiere production of Electra / Persona.
Electra / Persona is playing at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton theatre in autumn 2026, with dates to be confirmed.
The production is directed and adapted by award-winning director Benedict Andrews (The Cherry Orchard, Donmar Warehouse; A Streetcar Named Desire, The Young Vic).
What is Electra / Persona about? In the play, Sophocles’ Greek myth story of Electra is brought together with Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 film Persona. The show promises to create a charged dialogue that spans over 2000 years between the ancient and the modern, and interrogate the inner life of an actress and query how grief can make us strangers to ourselves.
Cate Blanchett reunites in the cast with acclaimed screen and stage star Nina Hoss (Homeland, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) after their performances in Oscar-nominated film Tár.
The cast also includes Ella Lily Hyland (Black Doves, The Unbelievers).

Cate Blanchett last worked at the National in 2019, starring in Martin Crimp’s When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other. Cate recently starred in a revival of Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Barbican Theatre.
The creative team also includes music by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, with further creatives to be announced.
