Carly Rae Jepsen and Lena Dunham Join Forces for Broadway Musical Adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You
A new stage musical adaptation of the teen film 10 Things I Hate About You is officially in the works for Broadway.
An impressive creative team is attached, including a score by pop star Carly Rae Jepsen, a book by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham, and direction and choreography by Tony Award and 2025 Olivier Award-winner Christopher Wheeldon.
The show will also have songs by Grammy-winner Ethan Gruska, and the book is co-written with award-winning playwright Jessica Huang.
Produced by Mike Bosner, the original 1999 Touchstone Pictures film, which is a modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, was written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, and starred Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Allison Janney.
Two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon (An American in Paris, MJ the Musical) will direct and choreograph the production, with music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by Broadway veteran Tom Kitt (Next to Normal, If/Then), himself a two-time Tony Award winner.
The film was praised for its sharp, witty depiction of high school life in 1990s Seattle, and the film’s legacy continues to resonate — not least thanks to Ledger’s memorable serenade of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, a scene that has inspired countless viral tributes and marriage proposals.
10 Things I Hate About You was included in Entertainment Weekly’s list of the Best High School Movies of All Time, and remains a cultural touchstone for fans of romantic comedies and teen dramas alike.
The stage musical is being developed for Broadway by Bosner in special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical. No production timeline or casting has been announced.
