The King’s Head Theatre has announced the cast for The Gang of Three, a new political drama by Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky. Directed by Kirsty Patrick Ward, the production will run from 30 April to 1 June 2025.
Set in 1976, the drama unfolds in the wake of Harold Wilson’s unexpected resignation as Prime Minister, as three senior Labour politicians jostle for power, exposing their rivalries and the fractures within the party that would ultimately pave the way for 18 years of Conservative rule.
The play will star Alan Cox (Churchill In Moscow, Farm Hall, Kingmaker) as Tony Crosland, Hywel Morgan (Player Kings, Home I’m Darling) as Roy Jenkins, and Colin Tierney (Rock ‘N’ Roll, A Doll’s House) as Denis Healey.
Returning to King’s Head Theatre after their acclaimed political satire Brexit, Khan and Salinsky continue their exploration of the intersection of ambition and ideology within British politics. Their previous works, including Coalition, Kingmaker, and Impossible, have been praised for their sharp writing and incisive wit.
Director Kirsty Patrick Ward, whose credits include The Children at Nottingham Playhouse and Groan Ups in the West End, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “I could not be more thrilled with my gang of three. Alan, Hywel, and Colin make up a true dream team. With their immense talent, combined with Tom and Robert’s razor-sharp script and our superb creative team, we will bring these fascinating, complex, and unfairly forgotten figures back to life.”
The production features set and costume design by Libby Watson, lighting design by Jamie Platt, sound design by Dominic Brennan, and movement direction by Ira Mandela Siobhan. Casting is by Harry Gilbert, with stage management by Felix Dunning and general management by James Quaife.
The Gang of Three continues King’s Head Theatre’s tradition of politically charged theatre, following its relocation to a purpose-built venue in Islington Square.
