Sheffield Theatres has announced its 2025–2026 season, marking the first programme under the leadership of Artistic Director Elizabeth Newman. The newly unveiled slate of productions, spanning autumn 2025 to summer 2026, features an exciting mix of new works, reimagined classics, and collaborations with prominent theatre companies.
The season begins in the Crucible Theatre with Dancing at Lughnasa, Brian Friel’s multi-award-winning drama directed by Newman in partnership with Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. The Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse will host Consumed by Karis Kelly, a co-production with Paines Plough, Women’s Prize for Playwriting, and Belgrade Theatre.
A new adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Aisha Khan will bring festive cheer to the Crucible, incorporating Sheffield’s unique Christmas carol traditions. Further highlights include Crown of Blood – A Yoruba Adaptation of Macbeth, presented by Sheffield Theatres and Utopia Theatre, and The Ladies Football Club, directed by Newman, celebrating the pioneering women of football.
Looking ahead, the season will conclude with Summer Holiday, an adaptation of the classic 1960s musical, spilling into Tudor Square with an outdoor theatre experience. Additionally, the company has announced plans for a 2027 production of The Year of the Runaways, adapted by Stephanie Street from Sunjeev Sahota’s award-winning novel.
Newman expressed her excitement about the programme: “It has been a great privilege to conceive my first season at Sheffield Theatres. This year-long programme balances new and familiar work, and I hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
