Legendary singer and songwriter Dolly Parton has launched a search to find the star of Dolly: An Original Musical, the new show about her life and career.

Since Dolly: An Original Musical was announced back in June as Hello, I’m Dolly, the show has had a name change, and also picked up its director – Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher (Kiss Me Kate, South Pacific, My Fair Lady).

The US casting search – “The Search for Dolly” – is an open casting call inviting actors to submit auditions via social media, in the hope of getting called to New York for a formal audition.

Producers are searching for performers of all ages to play Parton at different stages of her life.

The show, which is scheduled for a 2026 run on Broadway, will be produced by the UK’s ATG Productions, with Dolly Parton and Danny Nozell.

Dolly Parton said in a video released for the search that: “We’re looking for talented performers who can capture the spirit of my journey, whether you’re an experienced theater professional or an undiscovered gem with that little special something. So, what are you waiting for? This might be your moment to take center stage and step into the spotlight. Break a leg!”

Applicants in the US who want to audition should take a video of themselves singing one minute of their favourite Dolly Parton song, and upload it to any social media account tagging #SearchForDolly. Applicants need to also fill out an application form on her website, by Sunday 12 January 2025 at 11.59pm ET.

Dolly: An Original Musical boasts a score by Dolly Parton that includes many of her biggest hits, plus new songs she has written especially for the show. The book will be by Dolly and Maria S. Schlatter, and directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher.

Jim Carnahan and Carrie Gardner are casting directors for the musical.

The involvement of ATG Productions, based in London, is a good sign that the show may also travel from Broadway to the West End.

Whilst London waits it can enjoy Here You Come Again, a new musical featuring Dolly Parton’s songs, and playing at the Riverside Studios in London from 10 December to 18 January 2024.
