First Look: New production photos of Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana reveal a dazzling Cuban twist on the holiday classic

With Nutcracker in Havana set to open tonight, 1 November 2024, at Norwich Theatre Royal, we’re excited to share a first look at the stunning new production photos from Carlos Acosta’s vibrant reimagining of the classic ballet. Directed and choreographed by Acosta CBE, this colourful production combines the elegance of ballet with the rhythmic soul of Cuban dance, offering a fresh and exhilarating take on the traditional holiday tale.

The production photos capture the essence of Acosta’s vision—a unique, Cuban-inspired adaptation that transports audiences to a festive, sunlit Havana. With over 20 dancers from Acosta’s own company, Acosta Danza, and guest artists Laurretta Summerscales, Yonah Acosta, and Alexander Varona, the production is brought to life through both classical ballet and the spirited, intricate dance traditions of Cuba.

Set to a vibrant Cuban version of Tchaikovsky’s score, arranged by composer Pepe Gavilondo, the music fuses classical themes with Cuban sounds to create a wholly original atmosphere. The photos reveal glimpses of this visually stunning world, blending Nina Dunn’s remarkable video projections and set design with colourful costumes and evocative settings, as Havana collides with the Land of Sweets in a spectacle that promises to be unforgettable.

Following its opening in Norwich, Nutcracker in Havana will embark on a UK tour (see tour dates below), including a week-long engagement at London’s Southbank Centre this December. Specific roles will change for each performance, with cast sheets available at each venue, offering audiences a unique experience at every show.
