Award-winning playwright David Edgar’s The New Real is a thrilling, topical new play that explores the battle between mainstream politics and a new national-populist Right.

Directed by Headlong’s Artistic Director Holly Race Roughan, The New Real is set during presidential elections in a former communist Eastern European country, and sees two American political strategists engaged in a grudge match far from home, working for competing candidates, and redrawing the political faultline.

A talented cast includes Martina Laird (Casualty, Unforgotten) as Rachel Moss, Lloyd Owen (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) as Larry Yeates, Roderick Hill (Everybody) as Petr Lutsevic, Patrycja Kujawska (Don Juan, The Tin Drum) as Liudmilla Bezborodko, Jodie McNee (Minority Report) as Caro Wheeler.

It’s the 2000s. We’re in a faraway country. Rachel, a stellar American political strategist, and Caro, her British data whizz, have been hired to fight a ferocious election, in a place where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake.

They think they’re here to teach the Eastern Europeans how to do democracy, but it turns out they’re here to learn. And when Rachel’s former political partner Larry rocks up on the rival side, their showdown threatens to change global politics, from Warsaw to Wisconsin. Forever.
