British/American stage and screen star Andrew Garfield wants to head back to the stage – in a musical.

The Spider-Man, Tick, Tick… BOOM! and Angels in America star spoke to Variety this week at the SAG Awards, saying that he would love to star in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George.

Andrew Garfield already has a Tony Award under his belt, for his acclaimed performance in the National Theatre’s production of Angels in America in 2017 directed by Marianne Elliott, which transferred to Broadway in 2018.

Now he has his sights set on playing real-life artist George Seurat in Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George.

He told Variety that “I would love to do Georges Seurat in Sunday in the Park with George. That would be so much fun.'”

He will be following in the recent footsteps of Jake Gyllenhaal, who played the role on Broadway in 2017 alongside Annaleigh Ashford. The pair were also scheduled to star in the show at London’s Savoy Theatre from June 2020 although this has been postponed indefinitely.

Maybe Andrew could put Broadway aside for a moment, and just open Sunday in the Park with George in London?!

Stephen Sondheim, who died last year aged 91, collaborated with James Lapine on the show, who wrote the book. The musical is inspired by the French painter George Seurat’s work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and follows a character called George – a fictional version of the painter, who immerses himself in the painting.

Andrew is currently busy promoting his new Netflix movie musical tick, tick… BOOM!, the autobiographical show by Jonathan Larson (Rent), directed by In the Heights and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

There has never been a better time to present Sondheim in London, following Marianne Elliott’s five-star revival of Company in the West End in 2018. That show starred Rosalie Craig as Bobbie, with Patti LuPone as Joanne, and Jonathan Bailey as Jamie.

Fingers crossed Andrew Garfield does realise his dream and stars in Sunday in the Park with George.
