The Stephen Sondheim Society has revealed the winner of its annual Student Performer of the Year 2024 award.
At a ceremony at the Sondheim Theatre yesterday, Sunday 9 June 2024, hosted by Bonnie Langford, 12 finalists were put through their paces by musical director Nigel Lilley (The Witches, Next to Normal, Company).
The winner, who took home a £1,000 first prize, was Madeleine Morgan from the Royal Academy of Music. The runner-up was Gavin Rasmussen from LAMDA, who won £500; and a special commendation went to Oliver Halford of Emil Dale Academy.
The 12 finalists were: Holly Adams (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance); Brooke Bazarian (LAMDA); Oliver Halford (Emil Dale Academy); Harrison Langham (ArtsEd); Katie Leach (LAMDA); Madeleine Morgan (Royal Academy of Music); Rowen Newsome (Brighton Academy); Tumi Olufawo (Bristol Old Vic Theatre School); Thomas Oxley (Italia Conti); Daisy Pearson (Rose Bruford College); Gavin Rasmussen (LAMDA); and Josh Rosewood (Mountview).
The Chair of the Judges for this year’s award was Edward Seckerson, with judges Fra Fee, Callum Scott Howells, Jak Malone, Alex Parker, and Jenna Russell.
Guest performers during yesterday’s awards included Milly Willows, Joaquin Pedro Valdes and Ronav Jain, Jack Quarton, Molly Osborne, and the National Youth Music Theatre ensemble.
Prizes were handed out by judge Jenna Russell, and the show was directed by Hannah Chissick, with Choreography by Myles Brown, and the Assistant Musical Director was John Haslam.
The Stephen Sondheim Society is a charity that aims to promote the work of legendary musicals composer Stephen Sondheim.
Announced during the awards was news of a Sondheim concert coming to London this October, with Sondheim on Sondheim playing at the Alexandra Palace Theatre on 20 and 21 October 2024 starring Fra Fee, Georgina Onuorah, Jenna Russell, and Scarlett Strallen, with musical direction by Alex Parker.
