The writer and director of Once and Sing Street, John Carney (Flora and Son), is directing a new movie musical called Power Ballad.

The film has started filming in Dublin and will star Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle).

The story is about a wedding singer, played by Paul Rudd and a rock star, played by Nick Jonas, and the song that comes between them.

The film is written by John Carney and Peter McDonald (The Bachelor Weekend), and directed by Carney.

John Carney is former bassist for Irish rock band The Frames. His Oscar winning movie Once was also turned into a blockbuster Broadway and West End musical.

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová starred as the two struggling musicians in Dublin in Once on Broadway, adapted for the stage by Enda Walsh and directed by John Tiffany. The show won 8 Tony Awards included Best Musical.

The show also transferred to the West End, playing the Phoenix Theatre in London starring Declan Bennett as Guy and Zrinka Cvitešić as Girl.

Power Ballad is produced by 30WEST, Anthony Bregman’s Likely Story and Treasure Entertainment.

Here’s hoping that Power Ballad becomes a brand new West End stage musical.
