James Ijames, Sylvia Khoury & Sarah Einspanier named as the first three theatre commissions
Hollywood director Darren Aronofsky (The Whale, Black Swan) and his Protozoa Pictures are teaming up with screen and stage producer Los Angeles Media Fund (LAMF) for a new joint venture that will see them commission and produce new theatre projects, plus co-produce larger productions.
LAMF recently co-produced the West End run of Daniel Fish’s Oklahoma! at the Young Vic and in the West End, plus Rebecca Frecknall’s A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre and the West End’s Phoenix Theatre.
They were also a co-producer on Jamie Lloyd’s smash-hit broadway production of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain.
The new joint venture has also announced its first three theatre commissions – all high-profile US playwrights: Pulitzer Prize winner James Ijames (Fat Ham), Pulitzer Prize finalist Sylvia Khoury (Selling Kabul), and Sarah Einspanier (Lunch Bunch).
The two companies have already worked together co-producing last season’s Broadway revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window starring Oscar Isaac, Rachel Brosnahan and Miriam Silverman.
The new JV will be managed by Brendan Naylor of Protozoa Pictures and Luke Rodgers of LAMF.
Darren Aronofsky said in a statement: “I have been thrilled, surprised and inspired countless times by New York’s stages. Many of my favorite screenwriters honed their craft in the theater, so it’s very exciting to be partnering with some of today’s most daring playwrights.”
