Full casting has been revealed for the forthcoming West End revival of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, in an acclaimed and bold new reimagining by director Thomas Ostermeier.
Already announced is the play’s lead Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown, House of the Dragon) as Dr Stockmann. He will be joined by Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) as Katharina Stockmann, Priyanga Burford (Industry) as Aslaksen, Zachary Hart (Julius Caesar) as Billing, Paul Hilton (The Inheritance) as Peter Stockmann, Nigel Lindsay (The Lehman Trilogy) as Morten Kiil, and Shubham Saraf (The Father and the Assassin) as Hovstad.
Director Thomas Ostermeier said in a statement: “It’s a privilege to be starting rehearsals in the West End for the first time with a cast of this calibre, joining Matt Smith as Thomas Stockmann. I look forward to rediscovering the brilliance of Ibsen’s prescient masterpiece with this incredible group of actors as we build an English language production for London.”
This new version of Ibsen’s classic is by Thomas Ostermeier and Florian Borchmeyer, and this production was originally produced at Schaubühne Berlin in German, and has played around Europe, including the Barbican. It now makes its English-speaking debut in the West End.
An Enemy of the People will play at the Duke of York’s Theatre from 6 February to 6 April 2023.
