Mighty West End producer Sonia Friedman is co-producing a new musical at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre next year.
FANGIRLS, Yve Blake’s multi-award winning musical, is set to premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London in July 2024.
A smash-hit in Australia, FANGIRLS is a pop-infused new musical about female fandom.
Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Yve Blake, FANGIRLS is inspired by interviews with hundreds of girl fans, and Blake wrote the musical in response to Zayn Malik’s exit from boyband One Direction, and how the media portrayed the fans’ reactions.
The show premiered in Brisbane in 2019 directed by Paige Rattray, who is also directing this Lyric Hammersmith production. The show also had a successful run in Sydney and Australian tour in 2021.
The creative team also includes Production Design by David Fleischer; Choreography by Ebony Williams; Video Design by Ash J Woodward; Lighting Design by Jessica Hung Han Yun; Sound Design by Tony Gayle; Vocal Arranger and Orchestrations by Zara Stanton; Music Producer David Muratore; Associate Choreographer Alex Sarmiento; Associate Musical Director Laurence Stannard; Original Vocal Arranger Alice Chance; and Original Dramaturg Jonathan Ware.
The story centres on three teenage girls who are maniacally obsessed with a boy band’s adolescent British lead – with his perfect hair and dazzling, cosmetic smile. The musical balances serious social observations with a loving twinkle in its eye.
The UK premiere production will run at the Lyric Hammersmith in 2024, as part of its new season. Also included in the season is Minority Report – a new stage adaptation of the hit Tom Cruise film, and Wedding Band – Alice Childress’ drama about the romance between a Black seamstress and her white lover in early 20th-century America.

FANGIRLS is playing at the Lyric Hammersmith from 13 July to 24 August 2024.
