Rafe Spall will star in the West End premiere of To Kill A Mockingbird; now opening at the Gielgud Theatre in March 2022.
Spall, who has appeared in films A Good Year, Prometheus, Life of Pi, The Big Short, The BFG, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is cast in the role of Atticus Finch. The show was originally due to open in 2020 with Rhys Ifans in the lead role, however with the two-year delay he was forced to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
Rafe’s stage performances include the critically acclaimed one-man show Death of England and Hedda Gabler opposite Ruth Wilson (both at The National Theatre); the highly lauded Constellations at the Royal Court and West End with Sally Hawkins; and Betrayal, directed by Mike Nichols, which he starred in on Broadway alongside Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz.

Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel premiered to critical acclaim on Broadway in December 2018 starring Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, Dumb and Dumber) and more recently Ed Harris (Apollo 13, The Truman Show, West World) where it has broken box-office records. The show is currently suspended due to covid.
Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, published in 1960, explores racial injustice in America and features one of the most iconic characters in literary history – small-town lawyer Atticus Finch – famously portrayed on screen by Gregory Peck.
Produced by Scott Rudin and Sonia Friedman, the play is directed by Barlett Sher with set design by Miriam Buether, costume design by Ann Roth, sound design by Scott Lehrer, lighting by Jennifer Tipton, and an original score by Adam Guettel.
There will be over 500 tickets available for each week of the run between £5 and £10. Full details and initiatives to be announced later this year.
Tickets go on sale on 6 April 2021, with existing ticket holders being contacted by the production.
