London’s theatre-goers are in for a treat this May as Amélie The Musical opens at the Criterion Theatre in London’s West End.
Inspired by the much loved five-time Oscar nominated film, the musical stage adaptation is brought to life by an exceptional cast of actor-musicians led by Olivier-nominee Audrey Brisson (The Elephantom, Pinocchio and Pericles (National Theatre), The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk (Kneehigh), and The Grinning Man (Bristol Old Vic))in the role of Amélie.
Directed by Michael Fentiman, the show received its UK premiere at the Watermill Theatre in 2019 where it was described as ‘a visual treat’ (The Observer ★★★★), ‘a magical and emotional triumph’ (The Guardian ★★★★) and ‘irresistible‘ (The Times ★★★★). It then transferred to the Other Palace Theatre for the 2019 Christmas season with pre-covid plans for a West End season in 2020 which are coming to fruition in 2021.
The story follows an imaginative, shy romantic woman, Amélie, with a gift for helping others. It is set to the most wonderful score by Hem’s Daniel Messé with lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Daniel Messé and book by Craig Lucas.
In line with current Government guidelines, the production will play with social distancing in place and the seating plan and booking system has been designed to facilitate this process.
Producer Louis Hartshorn, CEO of Hartshorn-Hook Productions, said, “Amélie is about kindness, distance and human connection, and resonates deeply with what we have all been through over the last year. We’re very excited to be bringing this beautiful production to the West End and contributing to the reopening of the theatre industry. We thank the Arts Council and DCMS for the support of the Culture Recovery Fund and our hard working producing and creative teams for their passionate and careful work to bring our shows back to the stage.”
Casting for the production includes Sioned Saunders, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Rachel Dawson, Oliver Grant, Chris Jared, Caolan McCarthy, Samuel Morgan-Grahame, Kate Robson-Stuart, Jack Quarton, Jez Unwin and Johnson Willis.
Amelie The Musical is booking from 20 May until 25 September at the Criterion Theatre Theatre, London.
