London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket will reopen in May with Bill Kenwright’s production of Love Letters starring Martin Shaw and Jenny Seagrove.
A.R. Gurney’s 1998 play is about two people physically separated yet brought together by candid communication and shared confidences, a romance blossoming across the miles and the years. It could have been written for the covid era.

The production ran at Theatre Royal Windsor last October with Shaw and Seagrove receiving rave reviews. In its four-star review the Guardian stated the pair ‘are superbly matched‘ and the Daily Telegraph (★ ★ ★ ★) saying the ‘The two stars shine, while A.R.Gurney’s already bittersweet play here acquires an extra, decidedly Covid-era piquancy‘.
Directed by Roy Marsden, the piece will play a limited run at the Haymarket from 19 May and will play to socially distanced audience.
Love Letters will see Shaw and Seagrove reunite on stage following their acclaimed performances in The Country Girl at the Apollo Theatre in the West End of London and on screen in the TV series Judge John Deed.

Best known for Inspector George Gently and Judge John Deed , Shaw’s many stage credits include The Best Man (Playhouse Theatre), Twelve Angry Men (Garrick Theatre), An Ideal Husband (Theatre Royal, Haymarket), Are You Lonesome Tonight? (Phoenix Theatre), A Man for All Seasons (Theatre Royal, Haymarket) and Gaslight.

The production will feature limited capacity to allow for social distancing in the auditorium with covid-secure healthy and safety measures in place to keep audience, crew and actors safe.
Love Letters is booking from 19 May until 13 June 2021 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London.
Tickets for Love Letters are now on sale.
