‘Hairspray The Musical’ announces new West End dates

Hairspray The Musical has announced new West End dates with plans for the first four-weeks to play with social distancing.

The production will now begin performances at the London Coliseum from 22 June and will run until 29 September 2021. The show, which has moved its dates a few times due to covid, will play a shorter run than had originally been promoted.

Casting for the show includes musical theatre favourite Michael Ball (Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, The Woman in White) reprising his Olivier Award winning role as Edna Turnblad, Paul Merton (Have I Got News For You) as Edna’s husband, Wilbur, Rita Simons (Eastenders) playing Velma Von Tussle, Marisha Wallace (Waitress, Dreamgirls) as Motormouth and Lizzie Bea as Tracy Turnblad.

Based on John Waters 1988 film, Hairspray The Musical has music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. This revival is directed by the original Broadway director Jack O’Brien and has choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde).

Set in 1960’s segregated Baltimore, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, an over-weight girl with big hair, as she attempts to make it on a local TV dance show and win the heart of teen heartthrob Link Larkin.

An inspirational, fun-loving and fabulously uplifting musical the score features much loved songs “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.

Ticket holders with dates prior to 22 June will be contacted by their point of sale to arrange new dates or refunds.

Hairspray The Musical will now run from 22 June 2021 until 29 September 2021 at the London Coliseum.
