Disney’s Academy Award winning film Bedknobs and Broomsticks is heading to the stage in a new musical adaptation set to premiere in the UK in 2021.
The 1971 American fantasy musical film starred Angela Lansbury (Murder She Wrote) as Eglantine Price, a trainee witch in war time Britain who is charged with looking after three child evacuees from London. Armed with an enchanted bed-knob, a bewitched broomstick and a magical flying bed Eglantine and the children go on a magical journey from Portobello Road to the depths of the beautiful briny sea.
The film, which combined live action and animation, was based on the novels The Magic Bedknob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) by English children’s author Mary Norton.
The musical features original songs and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman, whose work includes Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as well as new music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and a book by Brian Hill.
The piece will be directed by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison with set & illusion design by Jamie Harrison, costume design by Gabriella Slade, orchestration by Simon Hale, musical supervision by Tom Murrary, choreography/movement direction by Neil Bettles and sound design by Gareth Fry.
