The highly anticipated West End revival of Hairspray The Musical will now open at the London Coliseum in April 2021.
Key cast including Michael Ball dragging it up as Edna Turblad, Paul Merton as Edna’s husband, Wilbur, Rita Simons (Eastenders) playing Velma Von Tussle, Marisha Wallace (Waitress, Dreamgirls) playing Motormouth and Lizzie Bea as Tracy have all confirmed for the new dates.
Michael Ball said: “Just like Edna’s famous roll-on foundation garments, it’s been a struggle but it’s finally going on, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Hairspray is the perfect show to help the West End rediscover its joy, energy, talent and relevance. Nothing says “we made it through” better than sitting in a theatre, watching a community facing the huge social issues of their day and conquer them with the help of family, friends, commitment and love….oh and some brilliant songs, spectacular dance routines and huge belly laughs. It’s just the antidote we need. See you there.”
The hit musical had been due to open in July 2020; it was then rescheduled to open in September and will now begin a 19-week season from 22 April 2020.
Until 26 July 2020, all existing ticket holders have priority to move their tickets to a new date. All new ticket purchases can be made from 10am on 27 July.
Directed by Jack O’Brien with choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde), the show is set in 1960’s Baltimore and follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair as she attempts to make it on a local TV dance show and win the heart of teen heartthrob Link Larkin.
An inspirational, fun-loving and fabulously uplifting musical the score features much loved songs “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.
Hairspray The Musical will now run from 22 April 2021 until 29 August 2021 at the London Coliseum.
