Bauer to close musical theatre station Encore Radio

Bauer Media Group will close musical theatre digital station Encore Radio, it has been announced.

UKRD radio group launchd the station in 2016 with Jamie Crick as its content director, playing songs from musical stage shows and films alongside related content and interviews. Presenters included Kerry Ellis and Duncan James. The station move to an online-only service in 2018.

UKRD was acquired by Bauer last year, which has its own offering, Magic at the Musicals, and the closure is part of Bauer’s efforts to streamline its portfolio of regional and digital stations.

A large number of Bauer’s channels, which usually operate regionally with bespoke content, will all be rebranded as Greatest Hits Radio with the same content but with local news, travel, weather and other information also provided.

The German media conglomerate, which owns an international portfolio of 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and tv stations, is looking to review its business strategy and cut costs following major write-downs in its disastrous entry into the Australian publishing market.

A final air date for Encore Radio is to be announced.
