Travel Tips

  • Have food, will travel: Revenge is a dish best served cold, so take your own lunch on that low cost flight and enjoy some home cooking.
  • Let the airline battle commence: low cost carriers are not the only airlines to offer low fares so it’s always sensible to compare prices with the bigger airlines before you book.
  • Airport location, location, location: This tip is especially relevant to London: Just because an airport says it’s in London or Oslo or Barcelona, doesn’t mean it actually is. Always check the airport’s exact location if your time is limited and you don’t want a long journey from the airport to the city.
  • Emotional baggage: Avoid scenes at the airport by weighing your luggage before you leave home to make sure that you aren’t over the limit.
  • The sound of silence: You can’t always control your environment when you are travelling. A noisy plane or hotel room is enough to ruin your holiday so earplugs are a sensible addition to any travel bag.
  • Travelling by train can be a complicated business – especially if you plan to make your way to London from overseas by train. The most comprehensive and useful website for rail fans has to be Seat61 which covers numerous countries and has great advice and resources.
  • Travel light: Packing is an art – and so is knowing what to leave behind. See Reid Guides for some tips.
  • Insure and be damned: There’s no doubt that if you plan to travel more than once a year then annual travel insurance is the way to go. Try Columbus Direct Travel Insurance or AA Travel Insurance. If you have pre-existing medical conditions then Columbus Direct Travel Insurance can also help with this.
  • Scan it: If you can, then why not scan your passport, birth certificate and driver’s license and email them to yourself in case anything gets lost or stolen. is not responsible for the content of external internet sites. Please check all information before you book or travel.
