Casting has been announced for Northern Broadsides production of J.M. Barrie’s Quality Street.

Barrie’s rarely performed farce will feature Jessica Baglow (Vera, Gentleman Jack) in the role of Phoebe Throssel and Dario Coates (Coronation Street, ITV’s Endeavour) as love interest, Valentine Brown.

The cast also features Jim English as Fanny Willoughby/Arthur, John Gully as Recruiting Sergeant/Spicer/Georgy, Claire Hackett as Patty, Louisa May Parker as Susan Throssel, Alicia McKenzie as Mary Willoughby, Sophie Mercell as Charlotte Parratt and Gabriel Paul as Ensign Blades/Isabella.

Set in a quaint northern town, the play centres on a determined headmistress, forced to create a younger alter-ego to reignite the flame of her just returned beau from the Napoleonic wars. The play was so popular in its day it gave the iconic chocolates their name owing to the play being set on Quality Street.

Quality Street will open on 14 February 2020 in Halifax, the home of Quality Street™, before touring to Salford, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Hull, York, Lancaster, Bury St Edmunds, Guildford, Derby, Scarborough and Harrogate.

Laurie Sansom’s debut production as Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides marks the beginning of a new producing model for Northern Broadsides, with each production co-created with “creation squads” formed from the local community.

In this production, the actors will collaborate with workers from the Quality Street™ factory, developing contemporary tales of hapless love and a live commentary that will frame the action of Barrie’s regency rom-com.

The creative team includes design by Jessica Worrall, lighting design by Joe Price and sound design by Nick Sagar.

Quality Street will have an official press night on 19 February 2020 at the Viaduct Theatre, Halifax.
